AI is here to make our lives easier, right? In theory, this is a good idea. But the advice I’m seeing posted everywhere has raised some MAJOR red flags.
There’s a lot of guidance out there showing you how to use ChatGPT or any other AI platform to build a resume from scratch based on a job description for a position you’re interested in. Something where you paste in a target job description on ChatGPT and prompt it to write a resume for you based directly on that description—in hopes that it will pass the ATS.
But here’s the issue: The resume that’s built has nothing to do with you or your accomplishments AND would 100% hang you out to dry and FAIL YOU if you get to the interview rounds. Not only that, ChatGPT doesn’t have the capability to reverse-engineer and identify the exact Applicant Tracking System software the company is using—so the keywords it includes are only a GUESS.
On the surface, this advice may seem like temporary relief because it’s giving you SOMETHING…but in reality, that something is a whole lot of NOTHING. It’s a false shortcut that will only hurt you AND set you back in your application process.
So that begs the question, what’s the RIGHT way to use AI in your job search?
